COMNEWS reviews the results of Satellite Russia & CIS 2014

The 6th International conference SATELLITE RUSSIA & CIS 2014 organized by COMNEWS Group was held on April 16th 2014 in Renaissance Moscow Monarch Centre hotel and continued April 17th in Schelkovo telecommunications center, bringing together more than 300 satellite industry professionals from Russia and abroad.

The forum was endorsed by Rossvyaz, National Assembly for Satellite Communications (NASC), Global VSAT Forum (GVF), Mobile Satellite Users Association (MSUA), National Association of Television and Radio Broadcasters (NAT) and GIS Association.

General partner of SATELLITE Russia & CIS 2014 was national commercial satellite operator Gazprom Space Systems (GSS), while Thales Alenia Space was awarded the status of general sponsor. National Satellite Company (Tricolor TV) was official partner of the forum, global satellite operator SES and largest Russian insurance company Ingossrakh were bronze sponsors, Airbus Defence and Space – registration sponsor, and lunch was sponsored by Israeli Gilat Satellite Networks. Session sponsor was iDirect, and technical session sponsor was Unique Broadband Systems. SATELLITE Russia & CIS 2014 also featured participation of Eastar and Iridium companies.

The conference was kicked off by Deputy Director of Infrastructure Projects of Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media Mikhail Kaygorodov, who highlighted the key steps aimed to eliminate legal loopholes and propel competition in the Russian market of satellite communications. Next, Deputy Head of Federal Communications Agency Igor Chursin welcomed the audience and outlined the scope of challenges satellite service providers need to tackle, and primary growth areas for the market. CEO of Gazprom Space Systems reported about the expansion program for Yamal satellite orbit group and its importance for Russia. Deputy Head of Sectorial Economic Cooperation, CIS Executive Committee Department of Economic Cooperation, Boris Sidorov delivered an overview of space cooperation efforts in the CIS. Sergey Stavropoltsev, acting CEO and Director of Regional Development of National Satellite Company (Tricolor TV) dedicated his report to satellite broadcasting in Siberia. Vladimir Terekhov, Head of Airbus Defence and Space in Russia, demonstrated the company’s new brand and elaborated on the collaboration between European and Russian manufacturers of space crafts. In conclusion of the plenary session, Dauria’s Projects Management Director Nikolay Vedenkin told about state-of-the-art technologies and growth opportunities for the market of small space vehicles.

What followed was an open discussion about the solutions to enhance satellites’ reliability and life, and ways around difficulties faced by joint manufacturing ventures. Panelists in the discussion included Dauria’s Projects Management Director Nikolay Vedenkin, First Deputy Chief Designer of Gazprom Space Systems Oleg Grafodatsky, Head of Sector at Central Project Department, CSKB-Progress, Evgeny Kosmodemyansky, Head of Department – Deputy Director of R&D Center, Radio Research and Development Institute (NIIR) Oleg Mentus, and Head of Russian office of Airbus Defence and Space – Vladimir Terekhov.

The second session was dedicated to VSAT and satellite B2B and B2C broadband. Technological excellence and new business models for satellite broadband projects in Russia and CIS from Gilat were in the spotlight of the report made by Timur Sarsenov, CEO of Gilat Satellite Networks Eurasia. Sergey Zinenko, VT iDirect Inc Sales Director in Russia, went on with a review of innovations from iDirect designed to boost performance, efficiency and scalability of VSAT networks. Pavel Bakanov, Deputy CEO of Eastar told about special technological solutions for Ka-band from EASTAR UHP. Deputy Director of NIIAS Center of Strategic Developments Vladislav Tamarkin dedicated his report to current state and outlook for mobile broadband systems in the railway industry. Leonid Rogozin, CEO of the National Assembly for Satellite Communications (NASC), finished the session with a report entitled ‘On several issues of frequency sourcing for radio-electronic facilities in the format of generalized resolutions of State Commission for Radio Frequencies’.

The session following lunch was dedicated to the market of satellite broadcasting and communications in Russia and abroad. Prashant Butani, Senior Analyst from NSR India, delivered an overview of satellite services’ market in Russia, Europe and worldwide. Yulia Shakhmanova, CEO of STV, told about the place of satellite services in today’s media market.  Gez Draycott, SES’ Senior Manager Sales Engineer, covered new communication technologies for mobile units in his speech.  Gennady Moldavsky, Iridium Communications’ Sales Director in Russia, made a report entitled ‘Iridium Russia: now and NEXT’.

The topic was taken forward at a round table which aimed to look into satellite operators’ plans and prospects, and the competition in the Russian market of satellite resource. Panelists, who shared their views on the existing market situation, included  Alexander Vyshlov, Representative of AMOS in Russia, Gez Draycott,  SES’ Senior Manager Sales Engineer, Jean-Philippe Gillet, VP for Europe Sales, Intelsat S.A., Igor Kot, Deputy CEO for Marketing and Business Planning of Gazprom Space Systems, Oleg Kolesnikov, CTO, NTV-Plus, Gennady Moldavsky, Iridium Communications’ Sales Director in Russia, Christopher Spore, ABS’ Senior Sales Director, and Timofey Abramov, CCO, Intersputnik  IOSC.

The evening round table was dedicated to funding and insurance for space projects. Panelists, who shared their experience, included Natalia Ramazanova, Deputy CEO for Economy and Finance of Gazprom Space Systems, Anton Dodonov, Head of Underwriting for Insurance of Aviation and Marine Risks, SOGAZ insurance company, Alexander Shevchenko, Head of Space Insurance, Ingosstrakh, Alexander Mikhailov, Head of Space and Telecom Department of Vnesheconombank, Timur Belikov, Head of the Directorate of Project and Export Financing, Gazprombank, Elena Glazkova, Deputy Head of the Directorate of Project and Export Financing, Gazprombank, and Andrey Rubin, Economist at Export Credits Directorate, Department of Export Financing, Vnesheconombank.

The second day of the conference was hosted at Schelkovo telecommunications center in Moscow region. A welcome speech from CEO of Gazprom Space Systems Dmitry Sevastyanov kicked off the gathering. Barriers to and new opportunities for the Russian market of fixed satellite services were overviewed by Alexey Antonenko, Director of Network Resource Planning Directorate, Orange Business Services, Alexey Sergeev, CEO of Web Media Services (HeliosNet), Konstantin Lanin, Head of Representative office and Regional Director of Hughes Network Systems, Timur Sarsenov, CEO of Gilat Satellite Networks Eurasia, Denis Dianov, CTO of Raduga-Internet, Evgeny Usov, CTO of GTNT, and Vladimir Dubrovsky, VP for Contract Work of Gonets.

Vladimir Sokolov, Sales Consultant at Unique Broadband Systems, presented a solution for satellite broadband and ground satellite facilities.

The second part of the day was dedicated to a tour around Schelkovo telecommunications center and informal networking.
